CHAMPAGNE TOURIST ROUTES Setting course for sparkling Champagne

There are many AOC Champagne zones in the Grand Est region. They are mainly located in the Marne and Aube departments, but also a little in Haute-Marne. Lac du Der extends over all three départements, so it’s not surprising to see vineyards nearby.

Champagne at Lac du Der?

Exactly! The vineyards are only a few dozen kilometers away. To the north of the lake, you’ll find the Route Touristique du Champagne des Coteaux Vitryats in the Marne department. To the south, you’ll find the Route Touristique du Champagne de la Cote des Bar in the Aube department.

The vineyard des Coteaux vitryats

Less than 30 minutes from Lac du Der, near the town of Vitry-le-François, you can explore the Route Touristique du Champagne des Coteaux Vitryats. It’s the ideal place to taste excellent Blanc de Blancs 100% Chardonnay champagnes. Indeed, these limestone hillsides north of Lac du Der are very well represented by 100% Chardonnay cuvées, since over 90% of the vineyard is planted with this grape variety. This Coteaux Vitryats “signature” champagne, available from most growers, has a beautiful yellow color and mineral aromas with floral and citrus notes. On the palate, you’ll appreciate its lightness and well-balanced acidity.

The vineyard Côte des Bar

Around 40 minutes from Lac du Der, not far from Bar-sur-Aube and Troyes, you can start exploringthe Côte des Bar tourist route. This route is quite different from that of the Coteaux Vitryats. Here, Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety, accounting for 85% of the 8,000-hectare vineyard. Thanks to this specificity, you can enjoy delicious Blanc de Noirs 100% Pinot Noir champagnes. Despite the name and the fact that they are made exclusively from black grapes, these champagnes have a lovely golden hue. On the nose, you’ll detect fruity, floral and spicy aromas. Finally, on the palate, these champagnes are denser and fleshier.

Visit a Champagne cellar

This brief overview of Coteaux Vitryats and Cote des Bar champagnes has certainly given you some ideas. We’d like to suggest that you take a trip to the vineyards to appreciate the beauty of the scenery, but also to meet the winemakers of our region. You’ll be able to visit their cellars, learn about the steps involved in making this unique wine and tame its terroir. The final touch will undoubtedly be to share a warm moment over a flute of champagne*, and perhaps leave with a few fine traditional, refined or surprising cuvées.

Don’t hesitate to let your gourmet side express itself by asking them for precious advice on how to accompany your favorite dishes. Champagne goes well with so many types of cuisine, it would be a shame to miss out on some great food and wine pairings. Since we’re being nice, we’ll give you a few hints… Champagne Blanc de Blancs 100% Chardonnay goes very well with seafood and fish. It’s perfect, for example, with the oysters that take pride of place on our tables during the festive season. Champagne Blanc de Noirs 100% Pinot Noir is the perfect accompaniment to roasted meats, game and dishes in sauce with a powerful, pronounced taste. For example, you can enjoy it with duck breast.

And don’t forget, there’s always plenty of opportunity to open a bottle of champagne, word of a champenois!

3 questions to Romain Prieur

Champagne H. Baty

  • What inspired you to work in this field?

“I wanted to work the land of our ancestors by taking over a family business and leave something concrete to my descendants. I enjoy being involved in all the stages of champagne-making, from planting to harvesting and vinification, and finally marketing the product. My reward is to give people pleasure by showing them my know-how and when they taste my product.”

  • What would you say are the particular strengths of the Coteaux Vitryats?

“All the winegrowers know each other thanks to the Association de Promotion du Champagne et des Coteaux Vitryats. The small farms are on a human scale… The quality of our Chardonnays and champagnes is beginning to be recognized throughout Champagne. The exposure of all our vines planted on hillsides, facing south-southeast, on limestone soil that lets water infiltrate and retains it in drier periods.”

  • Could you suggest a food/wine pairing?

“I recommend the Velouté de Potimaron de Pays with a Champagne Blanc de Blancs”.
